To the Editor:
Prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers in American men, with almost 240,000 new cases diagnosed each year. However, thanks to advanced treatments, today more than two million American men like me who were diagnosed with prostate cancer have been rendered cancer free or are on their way to becoming cancer free.
I was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2010, and almost immediately began radiation therapy treatments. I was lucky to have the care and support of my radiation therapy team at Gulf Coast Cancer Treatment Center. Dr. David Hurst and his staff were always pleasant and available to address any questions or concerns I had regarding my treatment process.
Thanks to the latest treatment techniques offered at Gulf Coast Cancer Treatment Center, Dr. Hurst was able to precisely target and destroy my cancer cells with less damage to surrounding healthy tissues, which resulted in fewer side effects and allowed me to continue on with my normal lifestyle. Furthermore, access to this state-of-the-art care close to home gave me the ability to continue working throughout my treatment process.
As we recognize Prostate Cancer Awareness Month this year, I would like to encourage other men in the community to schedule a prostate cancer screening. As always, if caught early, there is a much greater likelihood that the cancer can be controlled and one can make a full recovery.
Sincerely,
James Thompkins
